The cab ride home is tense with the obvious intention of the destination. Jesper knows exactly what's going to happen once they're at his building, up the stairs, and in his room. Kaz can sit there and feign disinterest but Jesper's skin hums a little, even if he's ostensibly the one who made the suggestion.

"Are you planning to stay tonight?"
materialnik: (Sneer)
Improbably, he's laughing as he steps out of the lift onto his floor, shaking his head at himself. What had he been thinking, throwing himself around that fight club like he was Matthias at the Hell Show? It's a joke and it doesn't matter that Jesper had actually won a few of his bouts when his cheek is swelling already, threatening to push an eye closed. There's a nice gash on the brow of his other eye and plenty of fist-shaped bruises on his chest and stomach.

That's all okay though, because he's almost punched the buzzing, fidgeting tiredness out of himself. He'll sleep well tonight, still and unagitated.

But first there's a bottle of sweet, hard cider in his fridge that'll make a good start towards a night of cheerful self-medicating.

He didn't really know, still, if Helvar considered Jesper a friend but Jesper didn't begrudge him for it when he felt likewise. They were friendly, of that he was certain, but neither of them were having deep conversations and exchanging secrets. They had been on the same team but they had been spokes that revolved around Kaz's plan and they stayed in touch here because of the familiarity of a similar world.

With Inej's disappearance, maybe it was time for that to change.

Chess wasn't Jesper's game. It required too much thinking ahead in a way that Jesper, wired for the immediate results, couldn't easily do. Gambling was an isolated experience, peppered with immediate gratification, but it wasn't a good survival strategy. Even Jesper, incapable of leaving a bad hand, knew that.

So he went looking for Matthias, a peace offering of coffee in his hands as he looked for his unit.
